Ghost Train - Episode #9

After a very long time away from DJing and keeping the podcast running I finally return with this mix, that will hopefully kickstart it and see continuous mixes running each month. I have (since my last mix in August 2012) really gotten into Trap music, a mixture between Hip-Hop and Electro with a dash of that famous Dutch sound. Built on the foundations of an 808 kit, the drop of a Trap beat is oh so satisfying, with hard hitting bass drums, high pitched synth leads, and choppy vocals that get you hooked to the genre instantly.

I have noticed it spring into a lot of high profile DJs, with huge support from the likes of Diplo. Baauers  recent number 1 hit, Harlem Shake, has only helped matters escalate and will truly see 2013, the year of Trap.

Ghost Train - Episode #8

Back to electro for episode #8. There has been a ton of excellent releases recently that I was dying to put on a mix, this is essentially my summer mix. Just a selection of tracks that I have been playing out and listening to over the last couple of months, but unfortunately I cant fit all of the tracks I wanted in, there are so many other tracks, I could in fact make a second mix. Although I am happy with the fact that I managed to fit 13 songs in 29mins.

I made this mix using Ableton live, I complete understand the mixing process within it now, at the beginning it was difficult to transfer the knowledge and understanding of mixing using CDJ's then bring it into a static program, its more of a production process than live mixing. There are a few errors in it, but to be honest, when I listened back, they weren't so bad as to correct them, I sounded as if they were human error and gave it a more natural feel, so as strange as it sounds, I decided to leave errors in it...

Ghost Train - Episode #7

In this episode, things get a little more house orientated. I basically wanted to show that I'm not just a one trick pony, and show off my diverse range in music. So there is a lot of house, tech house and techno in this months podcast. I'm guessing your thinking that, "there hasn't been any solid releases in electro, which is why he is doing a house set", totally wrong, there has been enough solid releases lately to make 3 episodes this month, but I chose a house set, simply because I'm digging a lot of these tracks at the moment.

This months episode is also a great accomplishment, I learned how to make static mixes in Ableton, in which this track is made! No CDJ's, all Ableton, normally I like the hands on approach of the CDJ's, and I am an avid activist in the CD DJing culture, but I decided to give it a try. Like anything, it was extremely difficult starting off, but after a few (6 in total) hours of messing around, I finally understood the whole concept of mixing in Ableton Live.

Ghost Train - Episode #6

First off, I'm back... After a long spell. I have been very busy with college exams and working hard but finally  after 4 years, achieved my honors degree. Now I can focus completely on the music. I'm sure you have noticed a change in design, again. I got the inspiration from BNR (I'm not even going to explain the Abbreviation), with their large, bold Futura font. Then just double over the font with an offset and color change.

Anyway, to the music. This mix was to be the death of me. Obviously not DJing in about 2 months, even the most seasoned veteran would seem a bit rusty, but after listening back to it, the first 17 minutes actually turned out OK, but its when the Moombahton and Dubstep come in, that's when it gets messy, and that's when I realized I cant beatmatch Dubstep. Most incredibly, my speaker wire came out of my speakers (yes, that's how shit they are) while I was making about 6 mins in, and had to keep going just listening to the headphones.

There have been a lot of solid releases over the last couple months, and being so, you would think that I would go over my 30 min mix time limit. No, in fact I came in at 27mins, to be honest, I had made the playlist like that, then ran out and could find another song to mix in at the end so just decided to end it.

In other news, I'm hard at work producing and getting to grips with Ableton, I made my first track, which I will have up on my Soundcloud soon, and creating an alias and working on the artwork for it. Until next time...

Ghost Train - Episode #5

Plenty of great releases in the last month, this months episode is a mix of my personal favourites over the last month, of course there are a few more, but couldnt fit them all in. I also decided to revert back to the old designs, although I would like to design a few more different ones, it was just easier this month with being busy and everything.

And It must be the first time since I started, that I dont have an Avicii track in a mix, I must be changing my ways. I always feel the need to end on something a little different now, like a Dubstep or Moombahton track now.

I did this mix as a practice for the national student DJ competition this coming Thursday, where I have a meager 20 minutes of play time, not much, but Im getting a general idea of what Im going to play, just have to practice it, definitely not a case of "lets just wing it", like a regular gig.

Ghost Train - Episode #4

This trying to get a mix done every 2 weeks is proving extremely difficult, simply because there are not enough quality releases within 2 weeks. So lets make it a monthly thing... although, with that being said, I have planned to do a best of 2011 mix next week. But besides that, the Episodes will be monthly, give or take.

I decided to change the design this week too, the other one was getting old, so I designed this one based off the old 50's Broadway, vintage era, which I'm in love with now, some of the designs and typography from that decade are amazing, but back to the point.. Music.

I know, again, another Avicii - levels remix, I'm sorry, I do apologize, but you gotta admit, it is the best remix of the track (well, in my opinion), much better than Skrillex and clockwork, mainly because Hardwell takes a different approach to the drop, with the grind/chainsaw/motorcycle, or however people call that sound. Oh, and again my apologies, the mixing came out terrible in the end, very sloppy, esp. at the beginning of the mix, but the song choice makes up for it (hopefully).

Ghost Train - Episode #3

I know, I know... Its been ages since I last made a mix, in what was supposed to be a fortnightly installment of mixes on the blog has sort of turned into, well, 6 weeks now maybe?

But in my defense, the releases over the last month were horrendous, thats all I will say. Only in the last week has there been some solid releases worthy of there place in a mix. This one is packed to the gills with heavy tracks, including some of the freshest releases over the last month, but most of which are the last week or so. I decided to just go straight Electro this episode, no Dubstep, Moombahton, or Tech House.
